Long before its formal institutionalization, the spiritual lineage of the Dashnami order thrived within the ancient, unorganized ascetic traditions of the Vedic period:
- The Rishi Tradition: The community originates from the ancient Ekadandi Sannyasins.
- Bhagwan Dattatreya: Revered as our Adi-Guru (Primordial Master), he represents the absolute pinnacle of renunciation (Avadhuta).
- Ancient Rishi Gotras: Ancestral roots trace directly back to the Saptarishis, such as the Atri Gotra descending from Sage Atri.
3. The 8th-Century Reorganization
In the 8th Century CE, Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya unified the scattered ascetics into a structured monastic order known as the Daśanāmi Sampradaya. He divided the order into ten distinct lineages anchored to four cardinal monasteries (Amnaya Mathas).

- The Nivritti Marg (Monastic Sannyasins) Lifelong celibate monks who renounce family to govern monastic properties and lead historic Akhadas (Juna, Niranjani, Mahanirvani).
- The Pravritti Marg (Gharbari Goswamis) Initiated disciples instructed to enter holy matrimony to ensure historic temples possessed hereditary priests. Gharbari Goswamis are recognized as high-caste, elite Brahmins.
